Long Time No Post

Wow, it has been a year since I posted anything on my blog and the first thing I discovered was WordPress has changed and I am trying to figure out how to use it. Sure hope this works!

Garry and I just got back from a fun five day trip to Nebraska. Our son-in-law Jason’s family is all back there and every year (except for 2020) there has been a memorial golf tournament for Bob Bottorff at the Highland Oaks Golf Club in Ponca, Nebraska. Bob was Jason’s grandpa. He was an original greenskeeper of the golf course. Jason’s grandma Leona, who just turned 90 this summer, also worked at the golf course for some time.

Grandma Leona

We flew into Omaha on Thursday and spent the night in Fremont where Jason’s mother Jackie lives, then headed to Ponca on Friday. Garry, Jackie and I were staying in one of the two bedroom cabins at the Ponca State Park with is right next door to the golf course.

The drive to Ponca was beautiful…. Fremont and that area is really flat with lots and lots of corn fields. As we headed further north we got into some pretty rolling hills and lots more corn fields. The Ponca State Park is right on the Missouri river and lots of Lewis and Clark Expedition history abounds.

The tournament is usually in June when we are leaving for summer boating but this year was in September so we decided to go join in the fun. We were promised it was more fun than serious which is good because Garry and I don’t golf often or well! For you golfers out there it was a scramble/best ball format with two teams of four at each hole. There were over 80 people in the tournament. And it really was fun! The course is a gorgeous 9 hole course that we went around twice. Our foursome of Garry, me, Jackie and Spencer (a relative of Jackie’s) played with Jason’s sister Amanda, her son Kolton and two friends, Marsha and Paige. It was a chilly 37 in the morning but 79 by the end of the day. We were lucky because Sunday and Monday it hit 90+!!

Saturday night a bunch of us headed to Bob’s Bar and Grill in Martingburg for lots of fried food and huge burgers and sandwiches.

Sunday Garry and took a leisurely drive to Omaha and headed to a sports bar to watch the Seahawks lose their game then flew home Monday. We pretty much decided that if the tournament is in September next year we will try to go again. I think it will be the 20th annual Bob Borttoff tournament so it will for sure be a memorable one!
