Still In San Carlos

Well, not much happening in San Carlos but I thought I would give you some ideas what we do to pass the time during the social distancing we are all doing.

Games

We have four card games we can play here but mostly just play two of them.  Rummikube and Racko are our favorites.  Friendly rivalries between us…well, mostly friendly.  We also play a little cribbage and we have Uno too, but haven’t played it yet.

Good game for 2.  Great game for 3 or 4.

All about the strategy

Love this game.. easy but not really.  There is a twist when only 2 play.

We have golfed one last time. It was the last day we could rent a cart because of the need to sanitize them.  Unless you had your own cart you had to walk and it gets really hot so that is not good.  They pretty much are just seeing club members golf who live nearby and come in their carts.  They don’t need to handle money or credit cards because they are members.  Golf cards and pencils are left outside for members to take.  Anyway, we had fun and we found more balls than we lost.  I was looking for my ball on one hole and found 7 before I found mine.

My ball could not decide which way to go… with the cart or to the green.

Garry has still been fishing some but last Friday we took a picnic day boat ride to a protected bay about 15 miles away.  On the way there we saw a commercial operation of some kind that isn’t always there.  We have no idea what was being put in the pens.  We also cruised the coast line and saw the remains of some buildings in the middle of nowhere that used to be someone’s dream.   It was a nice day on the water because the winds didn’t come up in the afternoon like they usually do.

Some types of pens floating out there.  One commercial boat.

Would love to know the history of these vacant buildings

If you zoom in can you wee the gecko that I see in the rock formation?

Precautions Taken in San Carlos

We are often being asked if we feel safe here – from the virus and from simply being in Mexico during these times.   Semana Santa (the Holy Week) is usually a huge deal here with approximately 100,000 Mexican vacationers camping on the beaches and partying non-stop for a week.  The state of Sonora government has taken precautions in addition to our local police to keep things safe and calm.  All beaches are closed and are patrolled in the areas where the activities usually are held.  Our beach is small and we have just the occasional person walking their dog or looking for shells.  Yesterday I even saw a military helicopter checking the beaches.   There is a small road block coming into San Carlos that stops cars for ask where the person lives or works and what they will be doing in San Carlos.  There is even a curfew this week from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.  Everything is peaceful, calm and barely a vacationer in sight.

The grocery stores all use sanitizer, usually squirting on our hands when we go in.  The employees wear masks and gloves.  They are being very careful and if we shop, we go early in the morning so are often the only customer or two in the store.  And we have plenty of toilet paper in the stores!  Sanitizer is hard to come by but I stocked up on some before the big wave of purchasing happened.

We are not the only gringos still in town.   There are still others here from the States and Canada but most plan on leaving in May or June because it gets too hot and humid and the mosquitoes are so bad.  Also, most have 6 month Visas.  We have paid to stay in the condo through April and so we should probably be back in the States by May 1, but not rushing home unless it sounds like we can with things being better there.  I joined another Facebook group for Ex-Pats in San Carlos and like most Facebook things you filter through the garbage but I frequently get good information that is well researched.  One things I learned was that the Customs at Nogales has reduced it’s hours because there is so little traffic, so instead of opening at 6:00 a.m, they open at 8:00 a.m.  Nothing to worry about there.

Stay safe and be healthy.
