We are in the middle of a week long visit with Garry’s oldest son, David and a good friend of ours for many years, Jon Elfstrom. Their trip started with a little challenge. Their flight from Seattle to Phoenix was delayed by 2 1/2 hours so they missed their connection to Hermosillo. American Airlines accommodated them with a nice hotel and a couple meal vouchers so they arrived a day late but nice and rested. David had been here with Garry in late May/early June so he knew the way. This is Jon’s first trip to Mexico so we are trying to show him all the local San Carlos area, a bit of Guaymas, and lots of fishing and sightseeing in our boat.
On Sunday the guys went fishing and caught mostly barracuda. Jon had hoped for some very fresh sashimi so when their fish guide, Roberto, cleaned fish on the way in, Jon whips out soy sauce and wasabi. Jon and Roberto were chowing down and Garry got interested so he tried some with soy sauce. He asked what the wasabi was and was told it was very hot…. he thought like hot Chinese mustard but David said 100 times hotter. I guess Garry did not quite understand because he took a piece of fish, dipped some soy sauce and then put a huge glob on wasabi on it. Down the hatch. I guess the hatch got pretty hot! He says Jon owes him a new stomach lining and some new underwear. Where is a camera when we need one!!!
David wasn’t feeling 100% in the afternoon so just Jon, Garry and I headed to Shots Bar to watch the Super Bowl. Pretty boring game and we didn’t win anything in the football pool. Plus the wrong team won.
Monday’s plan included a little sightseeing and lunch at the Soggy Peso on the beach about 5 or so miles away past the newer parts of San Carlos. The guys also did some work on the motor home ( that will be it’s own story).
Tuesday was a boat ride sight-seeing day. It was fun seeing San Carlos from the water side for a change. We went almost as far as Guaymas, but it was always ‘just around the next point”… oops, and then ‘just around the next point’. After a few points we pulled into a little area and had our packed lunches then headed on back home. Do you remember the Harry Nilsson hit album The Point? I always remember a sign in the Pointless Forest that said “A point in every direction is the same as no point at all”. That kept going through my mind over and over. The guys are out fishing today and it is pretty windy. Yesterday’s boat ride was cloudy and cool but nice calm water.
Here is the motor home story. I am not sure how on earth a motor home that is sitting and going nowhere has all sorts of electrical issues. While we are here at the condo it is parked and not plugged into electricity to keep things charged. We turn everything off and run the engine every few days because whenever we go out to check on it a low battery alarm is always sounding. It got so bad that Garry got permission to move it down by the offices and plug it in to charge. We were lucky it was Constitution Day which is a national holiday so we weren’t disrupting any workers. The bad news was that nothing would charge. The good news was that with the three brains of Garry, David and Jon they figured out a few problems and we are now fixed. Something about a blown fuse to the solar panel, an in-line breaker blown as a safety precaution that needed to reset and a loose connection to some wiring that was probably wear and tear with rough roads. I am sure David and Jon really appreciated laying on their backs under the motor home while Garry gave ‘suggestions’ on what to check and repair.
Tomorrow is the last full day here for David and Jon so it will be a free day to do anything anybody wants then they head back to Hermosillo Friday morning and will be home Friday night where they might be getting a snowy welcome home.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that I really am taking Spanish lessons. Wish me luck!
