Sun in Campbell River

Woke up this morning to beautiful sunshine in Campbell River.  While coffee is perking I decided to catch you all up on our journey so far.

We left Des Moines at 8:15 a.m. Wed morning after putting on 300 gallons of fuel first.   That was only 15 minutes later than our planned departure, so really a miracle in itself.   We were running with the outgoing tide so made really good time.   Straits of Juan de Fuca were super flat, so we continued  making good time, arriving at Van Isle Marina in Sydney, B.C. at 4:45 p.m.  It was so early and the water was good, so we kept on going a little further to Maple Bay to spend the night, arriving there at 6:00 p.m.

Thursday morning we needed to leave early so we could get through Dodd Narrows before the current was running too much against us, so we were up and out of Maple Bay by 6:45, making Dodd at 8:45.   It was only running 2 knots against us, so we I took it through while Gar gave me advice.

It was raining lightly and the water was flat calm, so we didn’t even go into Nanaimo and headed out in the Straits of Georgia.   Friends Simon & Yvonne on the Sandpiper had been in Nanaimo the night before and were already headed across the Straits, but heading to a different destination than us.   Our first plan was to go to Comox for the first time, but once again the water was just so darn good we kept going.   It was so boring, I’ve already read 2 books, we’ve taken naps, and we played cribbage while running the boat.  I won, of course.   Yes, we were watching for logs.   No boats out there to look for, though.   Very very quiet.   Might be partly that the price of fuel is over $4 a gallon compared to the $2.69 at home.

We got to Campbell River at 4:00 p.m. on July 1, Canada Day.   After a walk around on shore we had a nice dinner at the Rip Tide Pub, then watched a movie until the Canada Day fireworks display that was going to be right by our marina… very cool.

So, you are up to date.   Today we top off with fuel, then will head to Von Donop Inlet. But first we must hit the store for a couple small items we forgot.   Next update will probably be the 9th.

  1. Wow you are flying !!! How cool you got a fireworks show so you won’t be missing 4th of July here. Be safe and have fun!

  2. All it took was the battery from LB’s car and Garry’s little hammer to knock the life back into the Sabercraft. Dale, David, Richard, Jason, Tracy and I had a short 4th O July cruise, including some excitement at the end! What a drizzly fourth down here…

  3. More news please !!! Miss you bunches !!!!
